The Old French word for discipline, “descepline,” referred to punishment, correction, and suffering. The Latin origin of the word “discipline” is “disciplina” meaning “instruction and training”. It’s derived from the root word discere — “to learn.” Therefore, discipline is to study, learn, train, and apply a system of standards. The word “disciple” comes from the Latin word discipulus, meaning “student”; therefore, a disciple is a student or a follower.
